Former Patient Expresses Gratitude Through Irrevocable Gift and Meaningful Service

In March 2008, Ted Schumacher was at home watching a movie with his 15-year-old daughter when he began to have severe back pain. Ted’s daughter called 911, and he was taken to NCH Baker Downtown Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery for a life-threatening dissected aorta.

“They had to tell my daughter that I probably wouldn’t make it through the night,” Ted recalls. “I’m grateful every day that I did. I did because of the extraordinary critical care and heart team at NCH.”

Ted’s deep gratitude led to a decision to name NCH Healthcare System in his will. Earlier this year, he strengthened that commitment by joining the Viviano Circle—a special group of donors who designate their estate gifts as irrevocable.

“I had a long career in the insurance industry, so I understood how powerful estate gifts can be for nonprofits that are making a difference in people’s lives,” Ted said. “NCH is the reason I’m still here—so I thought if I’m going to give, why not make it irrevocable so the health system knows they can count on it.”

Ted’s support for NCH goes even further. He also serves as a volunteer courtesy cart driver, providing door-to-door service for our visitors from their cars to our entrance at the Baker Downtown Hospital.

“Most people coming into the hospital are already experiencing some stress or anxiety or have difficulty walking,” he said. “Something as simple as a friendly face and a ride can really make a difference in someone’s day.”

Sadly, less than a month after this interview was completed, Ted Schumacher passed away. His unceasing commitment to NCH—as both a volunteer and a loyal donor—warranted sharing his story in his memory.
